Premarin, Prempro, Premphase – Putting you at risk
Warnings have been issued against the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and estrogen replacement therapy (ERT), including the use of Prempro, Premarin, and Premphase. These drugs have been linked to a medically unacceptable risk for women.
While the manufacturer of these drugs has spent millions on massive advertising and public relations campaigns promoting these drugs as relieving everything from menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis (which the FDA approved), to preventing heart attacks, stroke, Alzheimer’s Disease, even wrinkles - science – and the FDA - never backed these additional claims.
Recent studies show that these drugs not only didn’t perform miracles, they put the women who took them at a medically unacceptable risk for heart attacks, as well as Uterine Cancer, Breast Cancer, Pulmonary Embolism and Blood Clots.
In a study undertaken by the Women’s Health Initiative, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute the following was found:
The results were so alarming that the study was ended prematurely because of the risks to the participants. Other studies have also shown health problems from these drugs.
The manufacturers of these drugs understated the risks and overstated the benefits, putting millions of women at risk. Why? Well, perhaps the fact that the company made an excess of $2 billion in one year from the sale of these drugs might explain it. (That’s not a mistake…that’s $2 Billion!)
It is both shocking and saddening that so many women have been put in harm’s way so that someone can make a profit.
If you have been prescribed one or more of these drugs, talk to your doctor immediately to understand your risks. Your doctor will most likely want to monitor your health closely.
